Low Hai Hong spent five months in Paris in 2001, at an artist studio in Citi de Ville, part of Nanyang Academy of Fine Art (NAFA)'s residency programme for alumni.

He had always wanted to visit Paris as an artist, having heard stories from his teacher Georgette Chen, who lived and studied art in Paris.

He admired her paintings and was inspired to be like her, to visit the museums, roam the city, and just paint to his heart's content without a care in the world.

The Letter Home

From all his overseas travels throughout the years, Low Hai Hong wrote only one letter home.  This was the letter from Paris.

It was a letter for his family, as much as a letter for himself.  Been in Paris brought about so many feelings and thoughts that he had to write them down, and share with his closest.

He was bursting with excitement, to see the masters in person at the museums, to indulge in the artistic city of Paris.

Original letter written in Chinese:

 这充满了浪漫气氛的艺术之都。名气那么的响!

Translated in English:

Paris, the capital of art and romance!

The letter from the Singapore artist in Paris continues with It's a Beautiful day in Paris.

I want to touch people with my art. I want them to say 'he feels deeply, he feels tenderly.  - Vincent Van Gogh
