Lim Leong Seng art exhibition

Singapore sculptor-artist Lim Leong Seng’s 9th solo art exhibition, “Journey from the Wilderness 林龙成:莽原的足迹”, shares the same title as the book he launched in 2022, a precious book that documents five decades of his art journey.

This exhibition showcases a selection of 70 works, from sculptures to sketches to paintings in ink, oil and silkscreen.

Known for his iconic public sculptures, which currently stands at 42 all around Singapore, there were miniature versions at the exhibition, such as the Human Connection, a sculpture installation at Asia Square.  It is fascinating to see the human figures up close, and you can sense the tenacity in them, striving as they make their ascent up the wall, just as we do in this wild journey of life.

Lim graduated from the now defunct Baharuddin Vocational Institute in 1970, where he met senior artists Iskandar Jalil and Jaafar Latiff.  He studied fabric, design and printing, and he continued working on these mediums till today, as we can see from the silkscreen on fabric works in the exhibition.

Silkscreen printing is a traditional craft that started from the Song Dynasty in China.  There was a video interview of Lim on silkscreen printing in the exhibition, and we can see the intricacies and hard work that belies the beauty of the finished work on display.

Equally mesmerising were his oil paintings and ink paintings, highlighting Lim’s versatility as an artist; the medium does not matter, as he seeks to convey the message through his art.

"Lim Leong Seng: Journey from the Wilderness 林龙成:莽原的足迹" runs from 13 to 24 March 2024 at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Galleries 1&2, NAFA Campus 1, in Singapore.
