Marina Bay is a bay located in central Singapore.

The Story of Marina Bay

Marina Bay was developed over the years as part of the plans for Singapore's new downtown.

From a modest bay at the mouth of the Singapore River where small boats ferry passengers and goods from ships that were too big to enter the Singapore River, it became a reservoir after the Marina Barrage was completed in 2008.

The Marina Bay is now a sparking waterfront with many iconic Singapore landmarks, including The Float @ Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay, Marina Barrage, Esplanade, Marina Bay Sands.

The Story of the Painting

In this painting by established Singapore artist Low Hai Hong, the view of the Marina Bay is taken from the side of the Marina Bay Sands.

Clifford Pier, the small white structure with an orange roof top, is the focal point of the painting.  It is barely visible, dwarfed by the tall buildings behind and the large basin of water in front.

With both the buildings and water in different shades of blue, the few strokes of colour that make up Clifford Pier marks where land and water meet.

It is night but the sky is radiant and bright, illuminated by the buildings and casting shimmering reflections on the bay.

Low Hai Hong was mesmerised by this scene that he saw across the Marina Bay that night.

He painted it on Chinese rice paper as he wanted to capture his impressions and feelings immediately and quickly.  Which he did, deftly with loose brushstrokes and confidently with a limited palette.

The result is a simple and yet stunning painting that soothes our spirits.

Public Viewing

This painting has been exhibited in public only once, in:

"A Tale of Two Rivers - a solo art exhibition by Low Hai Hong" was held at The Fullerton Heritage Gallery, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore from 30 May to 30 July 2014.

The exhibition showcased Low Hai Hong's 18 oil on Chinese rice paper paintings that  documented the history along the two rivers that he painted most in his artistic journey, the Singapore River in Singapore and the River Seine in Paris, France.

In an interview with the Business Times for the exhibition, he admits that he is one of the first local artists to use oil on paper consistently and seriously.

"A Tale of Two Rivers" art exhibition continues to flow, this time to Pont du Carrousel over the River Seine in Paris.
