One of the principal genres or subject types of western art is portraiture.
 
A portrait is a representation of a person.  It can be a realistic likeness of the person or an idealized view of the person.
 
A portrait can depict an individual or a group of people or the artist himself, which is called a self portrait.
 
Commissioned portraits were a way of making ends meet for artists, especially those before the twentieth century.
